Mid-July, no holiday, no festival on the harbor — a genuinely quiet weekend, and there's a clean way to do it. The Walters throws a free block party Saturday, the BMA runs a free family art morning down the street, Fort McHenry has War of 1812 sailors both days, the Aquarium drops to half price Friday night, the IronBirds are home in Aberdeen, and Annapolis has eight tiny weird plays back to back. Two of the city's best museums are free every day they're open — so build the weekend you want around them.
Top Pick
Block Party! at The Walters Art Museum — 600 N. Charles Street, Baltimore Saturday, July 18, 11am-4pm | All ages | FREE
The Walters turns its first summer block party loose Saturday: block printing and chalk murals, a silent disco, drum and Andean music, story times, a literacy bus, and food vendors with vegan and empanada options. Rain or shine, free to walk in — the Walters is one of the museums in town that's free every day. Five hours, come and go as you like.
Quick Weekend Wins
Free, and you can just show up
-
Family Art Adventures at the BMA in Charles Village Guided, hands-on art-making the whole family does together, at a museum that's also free every day. Pair it with the Walters Block Party a mile down Charles Street and you've got a two-museum Saturday for zero dollars. Saturday, July 18, 10am-12pm | All ages | FREE
-
Privateer Day at Fort McHenry on Locust Point War of 1812 sailors and privateers in period uniform take over the fort for the day — living history on the grounds where the flag actually flew. Park entry is a few dollars, or free with any National Parks pass. Saturday, July 18, 9am-5pm | All ages | Park entry ~$15 (free w/ NPS pass)
Ticketed This Weekend
- Half-Price Friday Night at the National Aquarium (Inner Harbor) — admission drops to $24.95 a person, 5-9pm, so a family of four runs about $100 instead of the usual gate. The evening slots go quieter than daytime; book online for a time. Friday, July 17, 5-9pm.
Budget-Friendly Finds
The near-free history weekend
Fort McHenry runs two different programs across the weekend on the same low park entry: Privateer Day Saturday (see above) and War in the Chesapeake Sunday, 3:15-6pm — a volunteer-led look at the naval war on the bay. One entry fee, a whole weekend of it, harbor-view green space to picnic on between.
For Toddler Families
- Baby Art Date at the BMA (Charles Village) — a sensory art hour built for infants and the very youngest, with their grown-ups. Free. Friday, July 17, 1-2pm.
- Tot Shabbat (Bolton Street Synagogue) — a short, song-filled morning service made for toddlers and their families. Free. Saturday, July 18, 9-10am.
- Bubble Fest (Chesapeake Children's Museum, Annapolis) — bubble games and hands-on bubble stations at a museum built for the under-6 set. With admission. Saturday, July 18, 10:30am.
Tween-Approved
A tight three on a thin weekend
- Aberdeen IronBirds vs. West Virginia Black Bears (Ripken Stadium) — cheap minor-league ball with between-inning contests and lawn seats a tween can roam with a friend. Saturday 7pm, or a Sunday 2pm day game. Family of four runs ~$60-90; lawn tickets bring it lower.
- Ten-Minute Play Festival (The Colonial Players, Annapolis) — eight brand-new ten-minute plays back to back: pirates, aliens, scandals. $10 a ticket, and the short-burst format holds a restless kid better than a full production. Opens Friday, July 17.
- Train kid? The B&O Railroad Museum runs Unlocked: American Freedom Train Saturday — a close-up look at the newly restored train, included with museum admission.

Coming up — worth a note now
- July 25: Science Slam! at BUGSS — rapid-fire science talks at the city's biohacker lab, ticketed and small (check the price when you book). The BUGSS watch continues: a kids' brain-science class follows August 1.
- Through late July: the Clarksville Sunflower Festival at Mary's Land Farm (Howard County) — free, and the fields only bloom for a couple of weeks, so go while they're up.
Local Intel
- The free two-museum Saturday is the move this weekend: BMA Family Art Adventures (10am) then the Walters Block Party (11-4), both free, a mile apart on Charles Street.
- Want the big day out instead? The Maryland Zoo in Druid Hill Park is open both days, 10am-4pm — a full paid day (~$100+ for four), no festival crowds this weekend.
Also This Weekend
